Climategate

"Carbon (Dioxide) trading is now the fastest growing commodities market on earth.....And here’s the great thing about it. Unlike traditional commodities markets, which will eventually involve delivery to someone in physical form, the carbon (dioxide) market is based on lack of delivery of an invisible substance to no-one. Since the market revolves around creating carbon (dioxide) credits, or finding carbon (dioxide) reduction projects whose benefits can then be sold to those with a surplus of emissions, it is entirely intangible." (Telegraph)

This blog has been tracking the 'Global Warming Scam' for over ten years now. There are a very large number of articles being published in blogs and more in the MSM who are waking up to the fact the public refuse to be conned any more and are objecting to the 'green madness' of governments and the artificially high price of energy. This blog will now be concentrating on the major stories as we move to the pragmatic view of 'not if, but when' and how the situation is managed back to reality. To quote Professor Lindzen, "a lot of people are going to look pretty silly"

The Log in the Eye of Greenpeace

WUWT
"As Greenpeace publishes yet another attack on a reputable scientist, (Dr Willie Soon), who happens to disagree with the IPCC, they again ignore the massive funding going into the “green” movement, from corporations including “big oil”, foundations and governments.

Their constant attacks on the integrity of genuine scientists are classic diversionary tactics to avoid close examination of the millions of dollars going into the Global Warming project. A commentary by David and Amy Ridenour in the Washington Times of June 14th last year, showed the major extent of funding to environmental groups by BP, who were being attacked by those same groups over the oil spill in the Gulf."

Crooked: UK's Carbon Policy Will Give Utilities £7bn Windfall

GWPF
"The UK’s carbon price ‘top up’ will encourage utilities to raise electricity prices, increasing their profits by £7 billion ($11 billion), according to a report by investment bank Credit Suisse.

From April 2013, electricity generators will have to pay a top-up carbon tax on fossil fuels – initially set at £4.94 a tonne. It has been introduced by the UK government in case the EU carbon price does not increase enough to make the case for investing in lower carbon generation, such as renewables. Higher prices will bring in an extra £24 billion in revenue between 2013 and 2020, the report concludes, but only about £17 billion will end up in the public purse.

“Whilst the EU ETS [Emissions Trading System] is successfully delivering emissions reductions across the UK and Europe, so far the carbon price has not been sufficient to incentivise the required levels of new low-carbon investment,” the Department of Energy and Climate Change said last week in its latest energy policy proposal.

Credit Suisse calculates that all UK utilities stand to benefit from the measure, except for Drax Group, which operates one large coal-fired power plant.

Green ‘stealth tax to encourage wind farms and nuclear power will hit poor the hardest’

Daily Mail
"A green ‘stealth’ tax to encourage new wind farms and nuclear power plants could push tens of thousands of households into fuel poverty but do nothing to reduce emissions. The carbon floor price, announced in the March Budget, could even end up giving climate policies a ‘bad name’, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has warned. To be introduced in 2013, the tax is intended to encourage investment in low-carbon energy – and raise billions for the Treasury."

‘Carnage’ in European carbon market as prices fall to 15-month low

EF News
"EU carbon prices have slumped 15% in one week, as a slew of bearish news took its toll on the markets.

The benchmark EU allowance (EUA) contract for December 2011 delivery has suffered an eight-day losing streak, dropping to €13.29 in trading this morning, a low not seen in the December futures contract since April 2010. The market recovered slightly as the day progressed, reaching €13.65 at lunchtime – but that still represents a 15% drop from last Thursday’s close of €16.10.

“It’s just been carnage these last few days,” said a trader at an investment bank in London. “There has been a huge amount of liquidation from funds, banks and utilities.”

Our carbon dioxide tax will be “economic disarmament”

Andrew Bolt, Herald Sun (Australia)

But China is making sure our coal will always be around for China to use, instead:

THE Gillard government is investigating potential loopholes in foreign investment regulations after it was revealed a Chinese mining giant spent $213 million buying 43 farms for coal exploration in the NSW Northern Tablelands.

Can’t Labor and the Greens see how incredibly stupid they are being? Can’t they read the lessons of these purchases? We’re cutting our own puny emissions by taxing our own use of coal in the vain belief that China will follow our lead. But China is buying more coal deposits precisely because sees its future as dependent on burning a lot more coal.

Compute, people. Compute.

CO2 levels have risen at the same rate for past 18,000 years

The Hockey Schtick
"While climate alarmists claim CO2 levels have risen at an unprecedented rate since the industrial revolution, extrapolation from ice core data shows the rate of rise has been steady since the peak of the last ice age about 18,000 years ago. This shows that man-made CO2 (~3% of total emissions) has had little effect on atmospheric levels of CO2, which instead are driven by outgassing from the oceans during interglacial periods; interglacial periods are driven by solar insolation, not CO2."

Why should we pay Ireland for its wind?

Christopher Booker, Telegraph
"Just when you think our Government's obsession with wind power could reach no further heights of absurdity, we learn that it now plans for us all to shovel billions of pounds into the pockets of the Irish wind industry.

The idea proposed by Chris Huhne and Charles Hendry, our energy ministers, is that the Irish should build thousands more onshore and offshore windmills, heavily subsidised by British electricity users, to help us to meet our EU commitment that, within nine years, we must derive 32 per cent of our electricity from "renewables". ......The bonanza for the Irish wind industry will offer little consolation to Ireland's turf cutters, who have been told by Brussels that all peat-digging must stop because the bogs have been designated by the EU as "Special Conservation Areas". Ireland's bankrupt government has thus been sending out aircraft, helicopters and a small army of officials to spy on illegal peat-diggers, lest it is faced with whacking fines by Brussels for allowing such criminal activity. Cooling (Not Warming) Causing Catastrophic North American Floods Of 2011

NoTricksZone
"The Canadian Prairies and the United States North Central regions are experiencing one of the worst flood seasons going back some 350 years, read here, here, here, and here. The reason for these floods is not well reported or researched by our media.

These floods stem from the extreme cold and the significant snow extent that fell in the central North America during the past winter. The very significant initial spring snow melt followed by a cool and very wet spring has resulted in more water than the ground could possibly hold. Some areas are having continuous flooding and have received two floods already and may get a third flood as well from new heavy rainfall."

Darwin endures big chill

NT News (Australia)
"DARWIN is "on track" to break another weather record - heading for the coldest month on record.

Weather bureau senior forecaster Angeline Prasad said that the mercury had dropped below 20C every day in June. "There has been 32 consecutive days below 20C," she said. "It is unusual." She said the record for consecutive days below 20C in Darwin was 53, set in 1965. "June is on track to being the coldest month ever recorded," Ms Prasad said. She said the previous coldest month on record was July in 1965, which experienced an average maximum temperature of 28.7C and a minimum of 15.9C. But she said that this month Darwin had recorded an average maximum temperature of 28.5C and a minimum of 15.8C."

EU Carbon Credit trading takes a dive. In Greece, they can’t hardly give EU carbon credits away

WUWT
"Last week, Greece started auctioning their EUAs (European Union Allowances). They need the money, and probably other countries will follow, including Portugal. But they were not that lucky! Of the 1 million permits, only 6000 EUA were sold. The reason: nobody is buying…

In the meantime, Poland has blocked an EU deal on CO2 emissions. They are the largest producer of hard coal in the EU, and the share of coal in electricity generation (92% in 2004) is the highest among the EU Member States. They are also pushing for shale gas. The result for them: the biggest GDP growth in 2009 and the third in 2010, amongst the 27 European member states.

Finally, Yvo de Boer has confirmed what everyone knows: the Kyoto Protocol is dead!"

The science is settled: US liberals really are the dumbest creatures on the planet

Telegraph
"What these liberal opinion-formers actually think – and you’ve really got to hand it to them: not even a lobotomised amoeba could beat them in a competition for dumbest creature on the planet, these three are absolute champs, Matthews especially, make no mistake – is as follows.

They think the main reasons for the public’s growing scepticism on Climate Change are 1. The media has been far too balanced on the subject and is not pushing the eco-message hard enough. 2. Big business is funding Climate Denialism. 3. Evil Conservatives – led by Evil Talk Show Hosts Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck – are deliberately telling lies about Climate Change. 4. The Republican party is “anti-science”.

Health effects of wind turbines under spotlight

ABC (Australia)
"Steve Coleman, a winemaker from Waubra in western Victoria, lives in the shadow of a wind farm and says the turbines produce several different noises. "This doof-doof noise, usually we get that when the wind's coming from the south-east because that's the closest turbines to us," he said. "But the ones that are two kilometres away, we get this constant jet rumble, which is almost like a jet rumble-cum-washing machine situation. That doosha-doosha (sound)."

Many of the Senate submissions were about the impact of these noises on people's quality of life. Some doctors reported wind farms can produce an almost inaudible low frequency noise known as infrasound, which in turn contributes to what is known as wind turbine syndrome. Symptoms include high blood pressure, headaches and depression."

Reduce your CO2 footprint by recycling past errors!

WUWT
"Anthony has pointed out the further inanities of that well-known vanity press, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. This time it is Michael Mann (of Hockeystick fame) and company claiming an increase in the rate of sea level rise (complete paper here, by Kemp et al., hereinafter Kemp 2011). A number of commenters have pointed out significant shortcomings in the paper. AMac has noted at ClimateAudit that Mann’s oft-noted mistake of the upside-down Tiljander series lives on in Kemp 2011, thus presumably saving the CO2 required to generate new and unique errors. Steve McIntyre has pointed out that, as is all too common with the mainstream AGW folks and particularly true of anything touched by Michael Mann, the information provided is far, far, far from enough to reproduce their results. ......My advice to the authors? Same advice my high school science teacher drilled into our heads, to show our work. PUBLISH YOUR CODE AND DATA, FOOLS! Have you been asleep for the last couple years? These days nobody will believe you unless your work is replicable, and you just look stupid for trying this same ‘I won’t mention the code and data, maybe nobody will notice’ trick again and again. You can do all the hand-waving you want about your “extended semiempirical modeling approach”, but until you publish the data and the code for that approach and for the other parts of your method, along with the observational data used to validate your approach, your credibility will be zero and folks will just point and laugh."

Study shows modern oceans are more alkaline than past 250 million years

The Hockey Schtick

Legal victory as Montana Supreme Court rejects warming lawsuit

SPPI
"In a precedent-making decision, the Montana Supreme Court dismissed the lawsuit by Our Children’s Trust saying unsettled factual issues related to limiting emissions of greenhouse gasses (GHGs) must first be addressed in a lower court. The Montana Supreme Court followed the recommendations of the Montana Attorney General, and rejected the claim made by Our Children’s Trust in its May 4, 2011, Petition, that a “scientific consensus exists that increasing emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) are affecting the Earth’s climate.” The ruling forces those filing future GHG-emissions lawsuits to first prove the scientific credibility of their global warming claims by means of legally competent evidence.”

The plaintiffs sought to have their case heard at the Supreme Court level without first working through the lower courts. Among the requirements for the Supreme Court to assert jurisdiction is that the dispute be one of law and not of fact. The Climate Depot report provides compelling evidence that the facts about global warming are anything but settled."

At any rate, the attempt to “sue into submission” is beginning."

Whereas Greg Barker is."

The Climate Tort is Finished

The EPA has merely asserted that power with an assist from the pure policy invention of the Court itself in 2006's 5-4 Mass. v. EPA ruling. Still, the fact that every Justice rejected the new climate tort theory, and that the opinion was delivered by the most liberal Justice, shows how abusive it really was."

EU Parliamentarian: “Europe Climate Policy Dead End…China, India, Australia Waving Goodbye

NoTricksZone
"The situation in global climate politics can be summarized in short: There isn’t any.

Especially the emerging economies of Asia are refusing to allow their possibilities for growth to be curbed by obligatory CO2 reductions. Everywhere globally climate laws are being buried for good or put on ice. Especially the once ballyhooed instrument of emissions trading is obsolete. China, India and Australia are waving goodbye. In the USA the Chicago Climate Exchange was closed just after the last midterm Congressional elections. Just before that, the self-anointed climate pope Al Gore cashed in by selling his shares. “Climate politics is a dead project“ is the word in Washington today. Yet, the EU is still clinging to all measures and is even discussing making them even stricter. As a result, we are now left alone with the political costs of CO2 reduction. We are ignoring international reality with an amazing level of tenacity."

Solar Physicist Dr. C. de Jager predicts Grand Solar Minimum will last until 2100

"Dr. Cornelis de Jager is a renowned Netherlands solar physicist, past General Secretary of the International Astronomical Union, and author of several peer-reviewed studies examining the solar influence upon climate. In response to the recent press release of three US studies indicating the Sun is entering a period of exceptionally low activity, Dr. de Jager references his publications of 2010 and prior indicating that this Grand Solar Minimum will be similar to the Maunder Minimum which caused the Little Ice Age, and prediction that this "deep minimum" will last until approximately the year 2100.

Greenpeace and the IPCC: time, surely, for a Climate Masada?

The IPCC declares Greenpeace in our time

Christopher Booker, Telegraph
"..This has engulfed the IPCC in controversy yet again, after a preview of the report made headlines by claiming that, within 40 years, nearly 80 per cent of the world's energy needs could be met from renewable sources, most notably through a massive expansion of wind and solar power.

What only came to light when the full report was published last week was the peculiar source of this extraordinarily ambitious claim. It was based solely on a paper co-authored last year by an employee of Greenpeace International and something called the European Renewable Energy Council. This Brussels-based body, heavily funded by the EU, lobbies the European Commission on behalf of all the main renewable industries, such as wind and solar. The chief author of the Greenpeace paper, Sven Teske, was also a lead author on Chapter 10 of the IPCC report, which means that the report's headline message came from a full-time environmental activist, supported by a lobby group representing those industries that stand most to benefit financially from its findings."

Oodles of Cash

Donna Laframboise (Canada)
"Pile reveals that, between 2007 and 2009, the EREC was awarded a contract worth $2.5 million from the European Union. Piecing together the associated paper trail, he has uncovered something disgraceful:

Trade associations are not only lobbying for their members’ interests, they are being paid to lobby the EU…in favour of the policies the EU has already determined it wants. It pays them also to set the parameters of its policies, and to suggest means by which they can be delivered.

In other words, the EU not only writes these people multi-million-dollar cheques, it then invites them to draft the guidelines that will govern their own industry. At the same time that this is taking place, the EREC produces a report with Greenpeace that later becomes a centerpiece of an IPCC document – of which a Greenpeace employee happens to be a lead author."

Madness on sea: A massive windfarm is being built off one of our most glorious coastlines and threatens an ecological disaster

Daily Mail
"What we are inspecting this evening is Einar's baby; Scira's £1 billion flagship project. Covering 14 square miles on completion, it will be the world's second-largest offshore windfarm. Hundreds of men, mostly Scandinavian but also Dutch and Belgian, are working aboard the couple of dozen boats and ships of the windfarm's fleet. Some live on a converted Danish ferry, at anchor a mile from the construction site. It frees up the holiday season accommodation ashore 'and keeps the men out of the pubs there', remarks Einar. Not everyone in the project has to live so monastically, however. Einar, for example, is living in a cottage in one of the prettiest coastal villages. And the previous night I had stayed in a nearby hotel, in which the rest of the windfarm management occupy a whole wing.A member of staff told me that the hotel, the largest in this popular holiday town, is sometimes more than half full of Norse maritime engineers. Yet we are not off Bergen, Stavanger or Tromso. Nor even Northern Scotland. This is the Sheringham Shoal, and some 10 miles to the south, the coast of North Norfolk — granted heritage status — can be seen quite clearly."

Greenpeace-gate breaks and the IPCC is busted. The shock. (Could they really be this dumb?)

Jo Nova (Australia)
"Steve McIntyre discovered that a lead-author on an IPCC report was also a Greenpeace employee, and worse, he reviewed his own work. A recent IPCC report claimed we could get 80% of the world’s energy from renewables was thus founded not on a selective peer reviewed paper written by independent scientists, and not even on a shonky economic “study” issued by a big-government-loving-university, but, gasp, on a Greenpeace sponsored wish-list for world peace. 10 reasons to be cheerful about the coming new Ice Age

Telegraph
"It’s official: a new Ice Age is on its way. In what has been described as “the science story of the century”, heavyweight US solar physicists have announced that the sun is heading for a prolonged period of low activity. This makes global cooling a much more plausible prospect in the next few decades than global warming. Indeed, it might even usher in a lengthy period of climate grimness such as we saw during the Maunder Minimum (when Ice Fairs were held on the Thames) or the Dalton Minimum (which brought us such delights as the 1816 Year Without A Summer)."

A blunder of staggering proportions by the IPCC

WUWT
"Steve McIntyre has uncovered a blunder on the part of Pachauri and the IPCC that is causing waves of doubt and calls for retooling on both sides of the debate. In a nutshell, the IPCC made yet another inflated claim that:

80 percent of the world‘s energy supply could be met by renewables by mid-century

Unfortunately, it has been revealed that this claim is similar to the Himalayan glacier melt by 2035 fiasco, with nothing independent to back it up. Worse, it isn’t the opinion of the IPCC per se, but rather that of Greenpeace. It gets worse."

Earth facing a mini-Ice Age 'within ten years' due to rare drop in sunspot activity

Daily Mail
"The sun is heading into an unusual and extended period of hibernation that could trigger a mini-Ice Age on Earth, scientists claim.A decrease in global warming might result in the years after 2020, the approximate time when sunspots are expected to disappear for years, maybe even decades. While the effects of a calmer sun are mostly good - there'd be fewer disruptions of satellites and power systems - it could see a sharp turnaround in global warming."

Ed: What global warming ?

“All three of these lines of research to point to the familiar sunspot cycle shutting down for a while.”

WUWT
“This is highly unusual and unexpected,” Dr. Frank Hill, associate director of the NSO’s Solar Synoptic Network, said of the results. “But the fact that three completely different views of the Sun point in the same direction is a powerful indicator that the sunspot cycle may be going into hibernation.”

Spot numbers and other solar activity rise and fall about every 11 years, which is half of the Sun’s 22-year magnetic interval since the Sun’s magnetic poles reverse with each cycle. An immediate question is whether this slowdown presages a second Maunder Minimum, a 70-year period with virtually no sunspots during 1645-1715."

Eco-guilt off the school curriculum? About time

Telegraph
"The misanthropy and guilt which are the stock-in-trade of the green movement have now penetrated so deeply into our culture – and most especially into our education system – that we no longer even pause to question what a warped, pessimistic vision of the world is now being promulgated.

But we should, and I’m jolly glad that at least someone in our “greenest government ever” is attempting to do something about this poisonous Kim Jong-Il-style indoctrination process.

The hero’s name is Tim Oates and he’s the man selected by Education Secretary Michael Gove to detoxify the National Curriculum. Here’s what the Guardian says about his plans:

Climate change should not be included in the national curriculum, the government adviser in charge of overhauling the school syllabus in England has said.

Why wind farms will have to shut down for 38 days per year ... when it gets too windy

Daily Mail
"Wind farms may have to shut down when it gets too windy because the National Grid cannot cope with a surge in power, a study has found. This could lead to the sites being shut down for 38 days a year - at present they are switched off for 25.Britain is expected to increase wind power capacity seven-fold by 2020 to 26.8 gigawatts (GW), which would put additional strain on the network and could lead to overload at times of weak demand and high wind speeds. The rapid rise in renewable energy from wind and solar plants is set to bring significant problems for the network as it tries to incorporate an output which is intermittent and more difficult to predict than that from thermal plants.'It will become increasingly necessary to restrict the output from wind generation onto the system to ensure sufficient thermal capacity is synchronised,' said the network operator the 2020 transmission system report published yesterday.

Based on historic data, wind turbines will have to be switched off for 38 days every year when wind power production exceeds 35 per cent of installed wind capacity and demand falls below half the levels seen at peak time, National Grid said.In Germany, where more than 25GW of wind capacity is already in place, high wind speeds coinciding with low power demand, for example overnight during summer time, have caused negative wholesale power prices as producers are forced to sell renewable energy to the grid."

Wind power and water power collide in the Northwest

LA Times
"For the last three weeks, however, many of the wind farms have been ordered to shut down their generation for several hours a day — victims of an unusual surplus of hydroelectric power that has confounded regional electricity operators and infuriated renewable energy advocates who have worked so hard to develop the region's wind bonanza. ......Wind energy advocates say Bonneville could have avoided shutting down wind generators by offering free hydropower to fossil fuel power plants outside its immediate area or even paying them to take the surplus power, as often happens elsewhere in the country in an energy marketing practice known as "negative pricing."

But Bonneville managers, who supply public utilities and a few large-scale industrial customers in the Pacific Northwest with traditionally low-cost power, said that shipping electricity outside its "balancing" area would raise its own ratepayers' costs."

UK faces job losses as businesses threaten to flee abroad to escape green energy levies

Telegraph
"In a new book – The Green Mirage – published in the summer by the think tank Civitas, Dr John Constable, Director of the Renewable Energy Foundation, has estimated the consumer subsidy for wind farms and other renewable energy sources will total at least £100 billion by the time the Government meets its carbon reduction targets in 2030. Dr Constable said last week: "The consumer interest is being sacrificed in efforts to meet arbitrary targets, apparently at any price. This is not a sustainable policy."

In a withering attack this weekend, Lord Lawson, the former Tory chancellor, said that David Cameron's attempt to make his the greenest government ever "does not have a leg to stand on" and branded the Government's decarbonisation policy as "absurd". It is estimated that an average of £200 is added on to the current household energy bills to help pay for the switch to renewable energy sources such as wind farms. That cost is expected to rise as more and more wind farms come into existence. In the strongest signal so far of the effect of carbon reduction costs, Tata, the Indian-owned steel manufacturer, announced it was cutting 1,500 UK jobs, claiming "EU Carbon legislation threatens to impose huge additional costs on the steel industry"

Broken Wind Turbine Blades Create Mountainous Waste Problem

Climate Change Dispatch
"Ultra-green Denmark admits it has no idea what to with a worrisome mountain of old and broken wind turbine blades. The composite material can’t be recycled.

In a story from Denmark’s leading business newspaper Dagbladet Børsen (June 10, 2011) experts warn, “As the wind becomes a central part of energy supply, a huge waste problem is growing with similar speed.”

Windy Scandinavia has hit this unanticipated hurdle because a key material in constructing wind turbines, carbon fiber composite, cannot be recycled and is fast filling landfills or else is being burned creating toxic emissions. The report admits, “a gigantic mountain of scrap blades is building up.” ......Summing up the lack of forward planning about wind turbines physicists and environmental activist, John Droz, jr, warns, “just because a power source is an alternative, or a renewable, does NOT automatically mean that it is better than any conventional or fossil fuel source.”

AN UNCOMFORTABLE LIE

Daily Express
"While energy experts will point to a rise in the price of oil, the Government’s commitment to renewable energy is the real reason behind the increases, as we already have 14 per cent added to our bills to fund projects which cut carbon emissions and global warming.

However a leading scientist who worked for Australia’s Department for Climate Change for many years, says experts got their predictions wrong and the whole idea that carbon dioxide is the main cause of any global warming is in fact a lie.David Evans, who was a consultant for the then Australian Greenhouse Office until last year, said: “The whole idea that carbon dioxide is the main cause of any warming is based on a guess made in 1980 that was proved totally wrong by scientists as far back as the mid-Nineties. The whole thing is now a train wreck. Although no one started out to scam or mislead, really the climate scientists are a bit corrupt now as they know they are exaggerating, but there are now too many jobs, industries, trading profits and political careers riding along on this nonsense to admit it is just that."

Industry begins to count the true cost of 'climate change'

Christopher Booker, Telegraph
"Two years ago, I published a book called The Real Global Warming Disaster, subtitled: “Is the obsession with 'climate change’ turning out to be the most costly scientific blunder in history?” For months it remained easily the best-selling global warming book in Britain, for two reasons. It told the story of how the science behind the global warming scare had been increasingly called into question; but it also wove this together, for the first time, with an account of the measures proposed by politicians to meet this supposed threat and how, far more than most people realised, they threatened us with an economic catastrophe.

Lately, it seems, ever more people have been waking up to the almost unimaginable scale of this disaster now roaring down on us. As one power company last week raised its charges by an average £200 a year, it was claimed by the Global Warming Policy Foundation that a fifth of our soaring energy bills are now accounted for by the hidden subsidies and other costs imposed by the drive to “decarbonise” our electricity supplies. ....Furthermore, we are all unwittingly having to pay billions for the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme, the Carbon Reduction scheme, higher airline taxes, higher vehicle duties, highly paid “low-carbon officers” in our council offices, and heaven knows what else besides. With the new carbon floor tax soon due to raise our energy bills by further billions, we can see why the Government’s own forecast – that the Climate Change Act will cost us up to £18 billion annually until 2050 – might well be an underestimate. "

Boy George Off to the Bilderberg

Guido Fawkes
"Osborne must be getting used to his regular jaunts to Switzerland, but something tells Guido, despite the juicy details, that this weekend’s trip won’t be splashed across the papers. Once again George is heading off for a mini-break with his old friend Mandy, to the über-secretive Bilderberg Group annual get together."

Bilderberg 2011: Full Official Attendee List

Global Cooling and the New World Order (Telegraph,Sept 2010)
"Which is what makes one particular item on the group’s discussion agenda so tremendously significant. See if you can spot the one I mean:

The 58th Bilderberg Meeting will be held in Sitges, Spain 3 – 6 June 2010. The Conference will deal mainly with Financial Reform, Security, Cyber Technology, Energy, Pakistan, Afghanistan, World Food Problem, Global Cooling, Social Networking, Medical Science, EU-US relations.

Yep, that’s right. Global Cooling.

Which means one of two things.

Either it was a printing error.

Or the global elite is perfectly well aware that global cooling represents a far more serious and imminent threat to the world than global warming, but is so far unwilling to admit it except behind closed doors."

Lynas on wind farms

Bishop Hill
"Mark Lynas has a must-read article about the impact of wind farms on bird populations. This quote from an Oxford biologist is just one of the memorable moments..."

'Leccy price hike: Greens to blame as well as energy biz . Who's paying for your neighbour's solar panels? You are

The Register
"Why? Because of government regulations imposed on the energy companies, whose effect is to drive up prices and pass the resulting extra cash to the owners of renewable power generators: from massive windfarms to rooftop solar panels on houses.

The first of these schemes is the Renewables Obligation, which compels anyone supplying electricity in the UK to present Renewables Obligation Certificates (ROCs) equal in number to a given percentage of the total 'leccy they supply (in megawatt-hours) each year. This percentage has been steadily climbing since the RO was introduced at the turn of the century: today it is 11 per cent and it will climb to a bit more than 15 per cent in 2015. After that it will persist until at least 2037 - it was supposed to stop in 2027 but the scheme was extended last year."

The REAL reason fuel bills are going through the roof? Crackpot green taxes you're never even told about

Daily Mail
"But none of them, I'll wager, will mention one of the biggest reasons why our power bills only ever seem to be heading up and up and why — regardless of what's happening in the wholesale energy market — they could easily have doubled by 2020. Spurred by the Government's stubborn but wrong-headed commitment to renewable energy, so-called green stealth taxes are already adding 15-20 per cent to the average domestic power bill and even more to business users. And yet, despite the growing cost of these taxes, you won't find any mention of them at all on your gas and electricity bills. That, of course, suits the Government down to the ground. If it raised the huge sums required to encourage renewable energy and limit carbon emissions through general taxation it would make the Government itself very unpopular. But by doing it through electricity and gas bills, the Government has cleverly ensured that it's the power companies that take the blame. The fact that these taxes currently don't even appear on our gas and electricity bills makes it even easier for the Government to get away with this cunning sleight of fiscal hand. So, what should be appearing on our power bills? First is the so-called Renewables Obligation, which currently requires power companies to buy 11 per cent of their power from renewable resources."

Why 'vote blue, go green’ doesn’t sound quite so clever any more

Telegraph
"The problem is made worse by the fact that Britain's targets are more stretching than those of any other country. In one of his last acts as prime minister, Tony Blair defied his official advice and signed up to them, in order to prove how virtuous he was. The estimated bill for that man's moral vanity is a capital cost of £100 billion by the end of the decade.

It also means that we are now, from an energy point of view, the worst country in the world in which to invest. We're not even helping to develop inventive technologies designed to reduce emissions because we are putting so many of our eggs in the frail basket of renewables. We dither over nuclear. We pooh-pooh shale gas. The other day, flying over the English Channel, I noticed offshore wind farms in the waters below. They looked, with their rows of white crosses, like military cemeteries. Mr Blair and his successors are giving the British economy a burial at sea."

Vote Blue, Go Green, Ruin Britain

Telegraph
"That issue, of course, is “Climate Change”. Never before in history, I doubt, has so much money ever been squandered, so much suffering and poverty exacerbated, so much economic damage been inflicted, so many lies promulgated and so much environmental destruction wrought in order to deal with a problem so microscopically miniscule. Really, if Barack Obama were to declare war on Belgium because he’d always found Tintin Au Congo offensively racist, or if David Cameron were to launch a nuclear strike on Mykonos because all those white-painted buildings were “way too gay”, you still wouldn’t be even half way close to equalling the quite breathtaking stupidity, purblind ignorance and suicidal wrongheadedness of the disasters currently being inflicted on the world by our boneheaded political and administrative classes on their holy mission to “combat climate change.”

Let’s concentrate on the British example since, thanks to Cameron’s determination to lead the “greenest government ever”, we’re further down the road to Eco Hell than most, and let’s look at the reasons behind those electricity and gas price rises."

Britain cannot afford this green madness

Daily Mail Comment
"Already, the cost of what Lord Turnbull calls the Government’s ‘global evangelism’ is plain to see: with households paying an extra £200 a year in hidden green charges on their gas and electricity bills and power companies being forced to scar the countryside with 10,000 ineffective wind turbines. The cost to the fragile economic recovery could be even greater, with advisers warning David Cameron that the move to a low-carbon economy will cost 1 per cent of GDP, or £13billion a year. Worse, we are the only country in the world to have imposed on its economy a strict,anti-competitive and legally-binding requirement to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50 per cent by 2025. China (whose annual increase in emissions is greater than the UK’s total emissions), India and the U.S. are all refusing to commit to significant reductions – rendering our own efforts as futile as they are foolish."

It's time this Government grew up over climate change, says Nigel Lawson

Daily Mail
"Lord Lawson, one of the most respected Tory figures of recent decades, accuses the Prime Minister of risking Britain’s economy to make a ‘symbolic’ point. In a devastating verdict he writes: ‘The Government’s highly damaging decarbonisation policy, enshrined in the absurd Climate Change Act, does not have a leg to stand on. It is intended, at massive cost, to be symbolic: To make good David Cameron’s ambition to make his administration “the greenest government ever”.

‘My dictionary defines green as “unripe, immature, undeveloped”.’

Stop hiding green fuel tax, firms told as pressure to come clean on global warming levies intensifies

Daily Mail

"Power companies were under mounting pressure last night to come clean about the green ‘stealth levies’ secretly added to fuel bills – and tell customers exactly how much they are paying for Britain’s climate change revolution. Consumer groups and MPs say energy suppliers should be forced to lay out on household bills how much customers are paying to subsidise green power and to end the UK’s dependence on coal, oil and gas. The call for greater transparency follows claims that global warming policies are adding up to £200 a year to the electricity and gas bills of millions of cash-strapped families.

The answer, my friend, ain't blowing' in the wind

Daily Mail
"Following the revelation that we’re all paying a secret stealth tax to subsidise so-called renewable energy sources, it seems like a good time to check out exactly what we are getting for our money. At midday yesterday, wind power was contributing just 2.2 per cent of all the electricity in the National Grid. You might think that’s a pretty poor return on the billions of pounds spent already on Britain’s standing army of windmills. But it’s actually a significant improvement on the last time I checked the wholesale electricity industry’s official website. At the turn of the year, the figure was 1.6 per cent. During the cold snap the turbines had to be heated to stop them freezing and were actually consuming more electricity than they generated. .....Why should British householders, uniquely, be forced to pay higher gas and electricity bills to disfigure our green-and-pleasant with hideous War Of The Worlds windmills, simply so politicians like Huhne can preen themselves at international ‘global warming’ conferences? It is suicidal to load unnecessary financial burdens on British businesses, which are trying to compete with cut-price Chinese products produced in factories powered by cheap electricity."

Ministers Fall For Climate Folly, Warns Ex-Civil Service Chief

WUWT
"The Government has to come clean and force the power companies to make their bills fully transparent. Only then, will those facing spiralling power bills have all the information required to make the appropriate decisions. Only then, will it be possible to see if a power company has been raising its prices unfairly and change supplier. And only then will the true cost of the Government’s mad rush towards renewable energy become clear, allowing voters to back or sack those who formulated the policy. "

Hidden green tax in fuel bills: How £200 stealth charge is slipped on to your gas and electricity bill

Daily Mail

"Hidden green taxes now make up a fifth of every household’s gas and electricity bills, energy campaigners warned last night.Cash strapped families pay an average of £200 a year in stealth levies to subsidise Britain's massive expansion of wind farms, solar panels and 'environmentally friendly' heating schemes.Yesterday outraged campaigners called for an end to the secret subsidies and demanded power companies reveal how much their customers are paying for climate change policies . ......The typical UK household spends £608 a year on gas and another £424 on electricity. Dr Peiser says green stealth taxes make up between £154 and £206 of that bill. For couples with large families - and large fuel demands - the figure is far higher.

‘And yet, despite the growing cost of these taxes, you won’t find any mention of them at all on your gas and electricity bills,’ he said.‘That, of course, suits the Government down to the ground. If it raised the huge sums required to encourage renewable energy and limit carbon emission through general taxation it would make the Government itself very unpopular.‘But by doing it through electricity and gas bills, the Government has cleverly ensure that it’s the power companies that take the blame.’

We must stop pandering to climate scaremongers, warns ex-Civil Service chief

Daily Mail
"Lord Turnbull – who served Tony Blair as Cabinet Secretary from 2002 to 2005 – accused MPs and civil servants of failing to challenge the ‘climate change consensus’.

He suggested that by blindly following the green agenda, the Government had hit hard-working families with a range of costly policies.Lord Turnbull also pointed out that ‘by and large humanity has prospered in the warmer periods’.‘It is regrettable that the UK Parliament has proved so trusting and uncritical of the (global warming) narrative and so reluctant to question the economic costs being imposed in pursuit of decarbonisation,’ he said.‘I am also disappointed that so many of my former colleagues in the civil service seem so ready to go along unquestioningly with the consensus.'From our politicians we need open-mindedness, more rationality, less emotion and less religiosity; and an end to alarmist propaganda and to attempts to frighten us and our children.Lord Turnbull’s unprecedented assault comes in a report The Really Inconvenient Truth for the sceptical think-tank, the Global Warming Policy Foundation. In it, he describes the Government’s expansion of wind power as folly and warns that Britain was rushing too quickly into a costly low carbon future. He condemned Britain’s self-imposed legally binding climate change targets as ‘unilateralism’ at a time when other countries are doing very little."

Debate is the enemy of the warmist

Andrew Bolt,Herald Sun (Australia)
"I’ve noticed the same cowardly tactic that Perth radio’s Howard Sattler describes:

THE Gillard Government and its carbon tax supporters are running scared.

How else can I explain the reaction of its chief climate change adviser, Prof. Ross Garnaut, to my request for an interview on the subject.During the negotiations my producer was grilled about my views on the proposed impost and global warming.Told I was a sceptic, the response was:"That changes everything.”Needless to say, the interview did not materialise.

Snubbing talkback radio commentators who disagree with the Government’s policy is one ingredient in the campaign to derail opposition to the tax. This is a deliberate tactic to avoid awkward questions, marginalise sceptics and pretend there’s no debate. What you should conclude is not just that these people have no real confidence in their arguments.

You should also conclude that every time you hear a journalist interview a government mouthpice or scientist on global warming, that this is one journalist who is trusted not to ask a hard question. "

BREAKING: Leaked Doc Proves Spain’s ‘Green’ Policies — the Basis for Obama’s — an Economic Disaster (PJM Exclusive)

PJM
"Pajamas Media has received a leaked internal assessment produced by Spain’s Zapatero administration. The assessment confirms the key charges previously made by non-governmental Spanish experts in a damning report exposing the catastrophic economic failure of Spain’s “green economy” initiatives. On eight separate occasions, President Barack Obama has referred to the “green economy” policies enacted by Spain as being the model for what he envisioned for America."

Obama's Bad Policy, Harmful Regulations Add to Gas Prices

USNews
"So far, pushing policies that raise energy costs and bolster the case for currently unaffordable green energy sources is one promise for change that the administration seems intent to keep no matter what it costs. Between February and April of this year, oil spot prices shot from an average $83 per barrel to $110 per barrel. The Energy Information Administration now predicts that average retail gasoline prices will increase from $2.78 per gallon in 2010 to $3.66 per gallon next year. The American people are entitled to the facts about policy decisions that raise energy costs and help the administration push expensive energy alternatives favored by environmental special interests. .........Our economic growth and ability to create more jobs depends on our ability to develop and deploy innovative technologies to harvest our vast oil and gas reserves. The discoveries of enormous recoverable oil and gas in places like Pennsylvania, North Dakota, California, and Oklahoma have made energy independence a real possibility and no longer a distant dream. The United States has approximately 2,552 trillion cubic feet of potential natural gas resources—enough to last 110 years at current usage rates. By 2015, fields in Texas, Louisiana, Colorado, and elsewhere could yield as much as 2 million barrels of crude per day, more than is now produced in the entire Gulf of Mexico. Developing these fields could reduce our oil imports by 60 percent in the year 2020."

Alarmist climate science and the principle of exclusion

WUWT
"And so, alarmist climate scientists find themselves under siege by skeptics and increasingly distrusted by the public because they blindly accept the principle of exclusion, in the face of considerable empirical facts that don’t fit the AGW hypothesis. For example, for more than a decade, the earth has not warmed as the AGW hypothesis predicts. Nor are the oceans warming as the hypothesis predicts. Yet, when skeptics point out the problems, alarmists cannot admit they have made a mistake because then the whole alarmist edifice (and the juicy research grants that go with it) would collapse."

Climate models go cold

Financial Post
"By David Evans

The debate about global warming has reached ridiculous proportions and is full of micro-thin half-truths and misunderstandings. I am a scientist who was on the carbon gravy train, understands the evidence, was once an alarmist, but am now a skeptic. Watching this issue unfold has been amusing but, lately, worrying. This issue is tearing society apart, making fools out of our politicians.

Let’s set a few things straight.

The whole idea that carbon dioxide is the main cause of the recent global warming is based on a guess that was proved false by empirical evidence during the 1990s. But the gravy train was too big, with too many jobs, industries, trading profits, political careers, and the possibility of world government and total control riding on the outcome. So rather than admit they were wrong, the governments, and their tame climate scientists, now outrageously maintain the fiction that carbon dioxide is a dangerous pollutant."

Germany's Nuclear Panic

Climate Change Dispatch
"It is the growth of government that lies at the heart of so many of the problems the West has encountered. Coupled with the environmental movement’s insanity, we get bans on the incandescent light bulb, insane requirements for increased mileage from a gallon of gasoline that is required to include ethanol, a chemical element that actually reduces mileage!

We have all just escaped the ravages of a massive, global campaign to convince everyone that the Earth was rapidly heating as the result of too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is still insisting that it be regulated as a “pollutant” even though all life on Earth depends upon it as the “food” that generates every piece of vegetation, crops, forests, and beautiful flowers.

It is stupid to shut down perfectly good nuclear plants as Germany plans to do. It is stupid to insist on covering areas the size of several states to generate solar energy or spoil the landscape with wind turbines that kill hundreds of thousands of birds and bats every year while, combined with solar, contribute barely three percent to our electrical supply."

Wind farms aren't just a blight, they're a folly

Telegraph
"For those of us who have travelled to this corner of England since childhood, it is a view that has changed little. However, if developers get their way, in a year or so there will be 16 wind turbines, each of them 415 feet high – taller than St Paul's Cathedral – right across this wild and wonderful landscape. They won't be the first, either. As I saw when I visited last week, wind turbines have sprung up all along the route into Cornwall, like mushrooms on an autumn morning. ......At the weekend, I was speaking to campaigners against the Bodmin Moor scheme who are gearing up for the public inquiry: for them, this is an all-consuming issue. In Wales, there has been uproar over plans for 800 turbines across the Cambrian Mountains. In fact, from the Isle of Wight to northern Scotland, local people are coming together to fight the windmills. .......Landowners love them, because they can make a packet from subsidies and rents for erecting just a few turbines on their property. ......To produce the same amount of electricity as one coal-fired power station, you'd need a wind farm the size of Greater London. And when there is no wind – or even when there is too much – the power produced is minuscule or the turbine has to be switched off while fossil-fuel stations take up the slack. They can be useful in powering a collection of farms, or a small industrial site, but that is about it. ........These turbines produce small amounts of electricity at great cost to the taxpayer and electricity consumer. The money being invested would be far better spent developing nuclear power – especially thorium reactors, which have none of the risks and waste associated with the uranium fission cycle. Thorium is a cheap, clean and safe alternative, and there are plentiful deposits in Cornwall and in Wales. "

AGW: brainwashed Australian politicians eager to start a diplomatic cold war with Czechia

Climate Change Dispatch :Written by Luboš Motl, physicist.
"Our leader, a well-known climate skeptic, has previously recommended Australian prime minister Julia Gillard to listen to the true climate change experts who live in her country, e.g. Bob Carter in particular.

The Australian and Monsters and Critics have already figured out what her reaction will be. Dear Australian readers, your prime minister won't meet our president after he completes his 16,000-kilometer flight! Her obsession with the global warming hoax is so intense that she is going to put the Australian-Czech relationships at risk.
.........What the Australian politicians are doing is wrong, wrong, and wrong, and it constitutes some indirect evidence that Australia is gradually ceasing to be a free democratic society. It is a society where politicians and citizens are expected to pay lip service to any myth that becomes fashionable at a given moment, otherwise they face troubles that makes their lives measurably constrained and they are being threatened with extinction. In this sense, I think that the unpopular comparison with Germany of the mid 1930s is completely legitimate and important."

Anthropogenic global warming is a huge costly fraud!

CDA Press.com
"The Earth's climate, like the rest of the planets in our Solar System, changes constantly in a 'natural response' to both terrestrial and extraterrestrial influences. These include solar rays, the sun is the big weather-maker, cosmic rays, radiation from exploding stars in our galaxy (supernovas), the moon and numerous other factors.

There have been several rather epoch climate changes since before the time of Christ, which AGW alarmists conveniently seem to ignore in their falsified climate models, like the Roman Warm Period (250 B.C. to 450 A.D.), the Medieval Warm Period (900 A.D. to 1300 A.D.), the Little Ice Age (1350 A.D. to 1850 A.D.), and the recent slow-warming from the mid 1800s through 1997.

This warming of the planet during the 20th Century was a mere 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit and, as I stated previously, was completely wiped out during the brief period from 1997-2011, especially after our 'sun went silent' in 2007."

Germany’s Biogas Bhopal? Deadly E. Coli “House-Made” Says Expert

NoTricksZone
"The German Die Welt online here reports that veterinary and medical experts are now saying that biogas plants may be the source of the lethal E. coli bacteria now running rampant through Germany. Although the disaster is nowhere the scale we saw in Bhopal, India, so far we have seen 18 dead and over 500 hospitalized. And needless to say, millions of Europeans are spooked."

Go green, go broke

Quadrant Online
"One difficulty in discussing green jobs is in knowing exactly what they are. Do I have a green job if I move as a maintenance engineer from a coal power station to a gas power station? I know that I have a green job if I work for a windmill power station but presumably not if I work for a nuclear power station, even though it produces no carbon dioxide emissions. Now a gas power station saves more emissions, when compared with coal, than an array of windmills because it produces so much more energy. So maybe gas is greener than windmills? Perhaps it depends on where I worked last. I have a green job if I move from brown to black coal but not a green job if I move from gas to black coal. I assume if I help produce solar panels and windmill parts or electric cars that I have a green job, but is this still the case if I use energy from brown coal to produce them?"

AGW proponents lose yet another debate down under

WUWT
"One compelling argument was the observation that to introduce a carbon tax of $25/tonne of carbon dioxide would cost around $100 billion by 2020, for a notional benefit of 0.0002O C (two ten thousandths of a degree) of warming averted."

Professor Beddington's report will let the great asbestos scam continue

Christopher Booker, Telegraph
"An all-too-familiar trick when the establishment faces awkward questions on some controversial matter is to set up a committee packed with people who can be relied on to avoid the real points at issue and come up with the answer it wants. The Climategate inquiries were all examples of this technique. Another was the recent inquiry, headed by the Government’s chief scientific adviser, Sir John Beddington, into the claim that thousands of people die every year from exposure to white asbestos. This scare story, which not only defies all the best scientific evidence but also the earlier findings of the Government’s own advisers, has become the basis for rackets costing hundreds of millions of pounds a year in bogus insurance claims and fraudulent contractors’ charges for work which is unnecessary.

Predictably, Prof Beddington’s team not only tiptoed round the scientific evidence but played as a trump card the fact that white asbestos is classified by the World Health Organisation as a “Class 1 carcinogen”. What they omitted to say, of course, is that the same list includes such things as alcohol, leather, nickel and sunshine. "

Climatologist Mojib Latif: Governments’ Fight Against Global Warming “Has Reached An Absolute Low Point”

Explaining Germany’s Anti-Nuclear Fanaticism

GWPF
"The spectacle of the world’s most successful economic power succumbing to its people’s angst seems unbecoming, all the more so as there is no European nation more dependent on electricity that Germany, and none with more open borders; Germany has 10 immediate neighbors, all with nuclear reactors whose radiation clouds, if there were ever to be a disaster, would not ask Berlin for permission before traversing German territory. Thus it is fallacious Schwärmerei to assume that a nation of 80 million surrounded by ten other nations could be turned into a nuclear-free land of bliss."

“Earth itself is telling us there’s nothing to worry about in doubled, or even quadrupled, atmospheric CO2″

WUWT
"The major assumption used for this analysis, that the climate of the early part of the 20th century was free of human influence, is common throughout the AGW literature. The second assumption, that the natural underlying warming trend continued through the second half of the last 130 years, is also reasonable given the typical views expressed about a constant natural variability. The rest of the analysis automatically follows.

In the context of the IPCC’s very own ballpark, Earth itself is telling us there’s nothing to worry about in doubled, or even quadrupled, atmospheric CO2."

Cooler heads prevail against climate panic

The Boston Globe
"By now, of course, few things are more familiar than predictions of the environmental catastrophe to which the use of carbon-based energy has supposedly condemned us. In 1992, Al Gore claimed that “evidence of an ecological Kristallnacht is as clear as the sound of glass shattering in Berlin;’’ nearly 20 years later he is still warning of “an unimaginable calamity requiring large-scale, preventive measures to protect human civilization as we know it.’’ Like Camping, Gore and other climate alarmists keep forecasting a Day of Doom that never arrives. And like Camping — who now says the world will end on Oct. 21 — they continue to be sure that disaster is just around the corner.

But hyperbolic climate rhetoric doesn’t scare as many people as it used to. Gallup reported in March that of nine leading environmental issues, global warming is the one Americans worry about least. In Britain too, as The New York Times noted last spring, fear of climate change has receded, as more and more people conclude that the dangers have been over-hyped."

Germany: Nuclear To Be Replaced By Coal And Gas

GWPF
"On Sunday, the parties in Germany's governing coalition agreed to close all the country's reactors no later than 2022. A cabinet meeting is scheduled for June 6 to finalize the legislative text, to be followed by parliamentary hearings. A final approval of the law is due by end-June.

Reactors taken offline immediately after Fukushima (Biblis A and B, Neckarwestheim 1, Isar 1, Unterweser and Philippsburg 1) as well as Brunsbuttel and Krummel are to stay closed. Their combined capacity is 8.5 GW. One is to be put in to cold reserve until 2013 in case of a sharp contraction in margin and a threat of blackout.

The country's nuclear fuel tax has been retained on a per gram basis, with lower output likely to result in lower proceeds.

Environment Minister Norbert Roettgen said the final legislation would be "irreversible." He said the vast majority of Germany's 17 reactors would be offline by the end of 2011."
