Tidal turbines: Alex Salmond hits a low ebb

"In February the UK Carbon Trust announced that it was giving £3.9 million of UK taxpayers’ money to a Norwegian firm, Hammerfest Stom, to build a tidal turbine at the European Marine Energy Centre on Orkney. This would produce piddling amounts of electricity (averaging some 270 kilowatts) at a quite absurd cost – higher even than that produced by wind turbines.
This month Alex Salmond, Scotland’s first minister, had the audacity to fly to Oslo to announce that Hammerfest Stom was to “invest £4 million in Scottish businesses” to build the turbine, and that this “overseas investment” was a “massive vote of confidence” in Scotland’s “talent, expertise and infrastructure”. He did not of course reveal that the £4 million came from British taxpayers in the first place. Even for the incorrigible Mr Salmond, such shameless pulling of the wool must have exceeded his own personal best. "

This follows on from its action in blocking four similar requests "in a bid to ensure that the plants do not deliberately boost their greenhouse gas emissions" – exactly the scam we discussed in December 2009 and again last June.
The Chinese plants are requesting millions of Certified Emissions Reduction Units (CERs) for destroying HCF-23, a potent greenhouse gas that is a by-product of manufacturing the refrigerant gas HCF-22. The credits are generated under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), which "allows" industrialised countries to offset a part of their emissions by funding reductions in developing countries.
The whole thing, as we explained in our earlier pieces, is a gigantic multi-million dollar scam. Furthermore, it has been going on for years, ignored by the greenies over here and especially the media. And even now, the World Bank is seeking to defend the indefensible."

Australians' Views Shift on Climate Change

Time to Cut Carbon Cutting

"Until recently Ed Miliband was only really known as the over-enthusiastic Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change. One of his first moves was to push through the Climate Change Act, mandating a cut in UK Carbon emissions by 80% by 2050. As MP’s dutifully filed through the ‘aye’ lobby they were lacking one key fact: how much would it all cost? Despite the best efforts of several backbench Tories there is yet to be a definitive answer.
Alex Salmond, spotting a chance to claim a policy as his own, responded by announcing the Climate Change (Scotland) Act. The only difference was a small increase in the intermediate target.
At least the Scots had the decency to, belatedly, estimate the cost of this misguided policy. Their figure? £8billion of central funding over the next ten years – just to cut emissions in the public sector. That’s without considering the economic effect on private businesses struggling to meet unrealistic targets. If that’s the cost to a country of 5 million people, shouldn’t someone point out that UK plc is looking at a bill of almost £100 billion in the next decade…"

"Well, first off, notice that a trend line fit to the annual data is just about dead flat right up until about 1990. (That is the very thin blue line at near the zero line) The change of “duplicate numbers” or “modification history flag” on thermometers starts to hit in about 1986-1987 but those records have a matching entry from the prior “duplicate number” until about 1990 when “the reveal” is done and the older series of “duplicate numbers” are dropped. You could put the segment break at 1987 and get similar results, but I chose 1990 as that is when the data series are left to stand on their own.
At that point we see a dramatic increase in the slope of the trend line as “AGW suddenly begins”. But, IMHO, it’s not the world that’s warming, it’s the data…
That is the most striking thing I see. Just look at the slope of that thin Hot Pink trend line! We go from nearly flat trend up to 1990 (the thin blue line) to dramatic warming (thin hot pink line) just as the “modification history” or “duplicate number” change indicates a change of processing of the data. Hmmmm.
